DRC NRJ7 Energy Conference in Kolwezi
Country Introduction
The Republic Democratic of Congo is located in central Africa, straddling Ecuador, sharing 9000km of borders with nine countries. The population of Congo is young and growing very quickly. It is the second largest country in Sub-Saharan Africa after Algeria, with 2.3 million km2 of surface. It’s largest production area is the Kolwezi, located in the center of mining industry, the Copper Belt.
It’s a country rich in natural resources and is known as the world’s raw material warehouse.
Minerals ressources of RD of Congo
It is the world’s leading producer and stockpile of cobalt.
- 1st copper producer in Africa, and second producer in the world.
- 95% of exports are mainly copper and cobalt.
- They produce cobalt, coal, copper, gold,lead-zinc and even oil.
The country is known as the «geological miracle» and produces all the stratum metals for NEW ENERGY.
Energy sector and Potential
The energy sector in the DRC is characterized by a very significant shortage that is holding back the environment.
- The Congo sunshine band is very high: average irradiation of 3.5 to 5.5Kwh m2 and up to 6.75Kwh/ m2.
- The congo river is the second largest river in the world, providing an energy potential estimated at 100 000MW.
The potential in Solar energy and Hydroelectricity are both enormous, but under exploited. Less than 20% of the population has access to electricity. And in case of power failure or lack, their only current solution is the generator, being also expensive.
